Species Identification of Medicinal Leeches — Molecular Taxonomy
DNA-based resolution of the Hirudo medicinalis species complex
Resumen
Molecular phylogenetic study resolving the Hirudo medicinalis species complex using mitochondrial and nuclear markers. Demonstrated that what was historically considered a single species actually comprises multiple cryptic species with distinct geographic distributions, including H. verbana and H. orientalis.
Por qué esto importa para la hirudoterapia
Essential for regulatory and clinical standardization. The species distinction matters because H. verbana (not H. medicinalis sensu stricto) is the species most commonly used in clinical practice worldwide. Accurate species identification is critical for reproducible research and regulatory compliance.
